February 16: Shrove
Tuesday
Celebration
6:00 p.m.
in the Fellowship Hall
Shrove Tuesday is a name that comes from the practice of shriving (purifying oneself through confession) prior to Lent. It's also referred to as "Fat Tuesday," as it's been observed (by some) over the ages as being
the final day before the fasting of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. In the 14th century, church families gathered on this day for pancake suppers and festivities. Our own celebration will include:
-
A Scrumptious Pancake Dinner
-
Family Pancake Relays Races
-
Short Reflectional Worship

February 17: Ash Wednesday
Service of Ashes
7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary
Lent is a season of 40 days
(not
counting Sundays) which
begins on
Ash Wednesday and is the season of
preparation for celebrating Easter. Ash
Wednesday
emphasizes
a dual
encounter as
we confront
our own
mortality
and
confess
our
sin before
God with the
community
of faith. The
use of
ashes
as a sign of mortality
and
repentance
has a long history in
both
Jewish and
Christian worship.
The
Imposition
of
Ashes is a
powerful,
nonverbal
way of
participating
in the
call
to
repentance
and reconciliation.
